John 1:1
Matthew 4:4 Man can not live by bread alone but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
2Timothy 2:15
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
2 Peter 1:20
Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
How can we rightly divide the word of truth
1) Understand its original context and compare Scripture with Scripture to avoid false interpretations.
A) Rely on the Holy Spirit to give us the correct interpretations.
B) Begin with straightforward verses to establish a foundation for understanding more complex passages.
C) Read all relevant verses on a subject to avoid forming beliefs based on isolated scriptures.
D) Avoid personal biases and preconceived ideas; allow Scripture to clarify its own meaning.
By following these principles, you can gain a deeper understanding of the Scriptures and how they apply to your life. If we read a passage we can't comprehend,, we can’t just dismiss it for lack of understanding. We must rightly divide and rely on the Holy Spirit for proper discernment. Remember, Matthew 4:4 Tells us that man can not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God.
Physical nourishment vs. spiritual nourishment
A) We must give our body food and water for survival. We feed our spirit with the word of God.
B) If we don’t feed our carnal body, it dies. If we don’t feed our spirit, it starves.
C) How can we grow closer to God if we don’t really know and understand Him?
It is our personal responsibility to feed our Spirit man. Prayer and the Holy Spirt's discernment is the key to unlock the deeper understanding of God's truth. God give us His word, He knows exactly what He meant to say.
When two people meet, they might feel a spark of fondness, but spending more time together often deepens those feelings. The more we learn about someone, the more we appreciate and care for them. Our connection grows stronger, and our bond becomes more meaningful. It’s the same with God—the more time we spend with Him, the more we come to understand and love Him. We can’t build a personal relationship with God by relying on someone else’s faith. Simply hearing His word on Sundays or Wednesdays only shows that the speaker has a close connection with Him. We need to take responsibility for our own spiritual growth and health by diving into His word and seeking the right understanding of the truth for ourselves..
2 Timothy 3:16
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
1 Thessalonians 5:21
Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
1 Corinthians 2:14
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
The scripture must be discerned by the Spirit. To be carnally minded is death.(Romans 8:6)
Matthew 24:24 “For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”
A) If we don’t know the truth, we will be one of the ones to be deceived.
B) "I’m sorry Lord, I didn’t know." Ignorance will be no excuse when we stand before God.
2 Peter 3:16
As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
(AMP)
speaking about these things as he does in all of his letters. In which there are some things that are difficult to understand, which the untaught and unstable [who have fallen into error] twist and misinterpret, just as they do the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.
1 Corinthians 2:13
Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
Acts 17:11
These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
They searched the scriptures for themselves. They didn’t rely on someone else's understanding. They wanted to know for sure.
Acts 15:1-41
The Jews demanded that the Gentiles receive the circumcision of the flesh to be saved, (the Abrahamic covenant) But Paul told them that it was not a requirement. When Jesus gave his life on the cross, there was a new covenant with man. (The shedding of Jesus' blood)
John 17:17
Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
God's word is the greatest truth you'll ever know. And the gift of salvation is an eternal reward.
2 Timothy 2:8
Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:
Paul reminded them that his gospel was the truth,
2 Timothy 4:1-2
Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
2 Timothy 4:16
16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
1 Timothy 1:3
As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,
We must be learned in God;s word to guard ourselves against deception and false teachings.
Galatians 2:20
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Galatians 2:
16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
19 For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. 20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. 21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
It is impossible to obey the laws without the indwelling Spirit of the Holy Ghost.
Galatians 1:11-12
But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. 12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ
The flesh did not reveal the truth, the Spirit did.
2 Corinthians 11:2
For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.
We are the bride and Jesus is the husband. We must be spiritually pure.
2 Corinthians 3:6
Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.
(AMP)
He has qualified us [making us sufficient] as ministers of a new covenant [of salvation through Christ], not of the letter [of a written code] but of the Spirit; for the letter [of the Law] kills [by revealing sin and demanding obedience], but the Spirit gives life.
The Spirit gives us mercy and grace.
Romans 16:17-18
Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
18For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.
Avoid false teachings. Some teachers mishandle the scriptures for the purpose of leading astray.
Romans 1:20
For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
God created the world by His Word and Spirit.
Acts 11:1-9
And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God. 2 And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him, 3 Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them. 4 But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order unto them, saying, 5 I was in the city of Joppa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me: 6 Upon the which when I had fastened mine eyes, I considered, and saw fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. 7 And I heard a voice saying unto me, Arise, Peter; slay and eat. 8 But I said, Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth. 9 But the voice answered me again from heaven, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.
The Spirit gave Peter revelation not his flesh.
John 4:24
But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
